Shopping List...

Bill and I sat down to try and decide what plants he wanted to put in his veggie garden.  The church we've been attending does plant sales, so we pulled out the order form and got down to business.  While still leaving room for some seeds to get started we picked out some interesting plants to stick in there too.  We're expecting a crop of classic red tomatoes from the CSA, so our shopping list includes some interesting heirloom species for variety.

What's different about Heirlooms?  According to good ole' Martha, heirloom species are the "antiques" of the vegetable world, and each species has to have been cultivated for at least 50 years, are open-pollinated (natural forces rather than controlled hybrid-pollination), and traditionally the seeds are saved and passed from gardener to gardener... rather than just from the church order form...

Heirloom Tomatoes on the Shopping List

Amish Paste -  a super meaty paste tomato
Amish Paste from Slow Food USA

Cherokee Purple - This guy originated in Tennessee!  Advertised to be one of the best tasting
                                         heirloom varieties
Cherokee Purple from SeedSavers.org

Green Zebra - a yellow-green striped salad tomato with a tangy flavor
Green Zebra from Heirloom Tomato Company

Sungold - I wanted this one because I love the pretty orange-gold color.  It's a sweeter cherry tomato.

We'll have to wait a little bit for the order to be filled and test out our green thumbs on the tomato plants. This weekend will be getting the garden bed ready and starting some seeds
